Getting to know your sewing machine

This  workshop it is suitable for anyone who owns a sewing machine and has an interest in learning how to use it. No previous experience is necessary.

On this workshop you will gain knowledge on the different functions of your sewing machine and how to do your own simple maintenance to keep it in good working order.

This will include:

  • Identifying the parts of the sewing machine.
  • How the stitch is made.
  • Importance of choosing correct needle and thread.
  • Design of the needle.
  • Inserting/changing the needle.
  • Wind and load the bobbin.
  • Thread the upper thread.
  • Test the stitch quality and balance the tensions.
  • Basic maintenance.
  • Look at different feet and how to change them.
  • Time permitting we would look at how to insert a zip.

Any extra cost incurred for the course: You  need to bring fabric samples to work on, some cotton fabric (calico or similar), and some stretch fabric; sewing thread; shirring elastic; a zip of any length notebook and pen; and a simple sewing kit to include pins, needles and scissors.

Equipment to be provided by student: Please bring your sewing machine, sewing machine manual, and all the feet you have. Sewing machine, basic sewing kit. Please note all machines will be PAT tested on the first session.
